PISA

PISA is the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment. PISA measures 15-year-olds’ ability to use their reading, mathematics and science knowledge and skills to meet real-life challenges. The National Centre for PISA Research is located at the Finnish Institute for Educational Research in Jyväskylä.

PISA assesses the learning outcome of students aged 15 in mathematics, science and reading literacy. PISA assesses to what extent students have acquired knowledge and skills essential for full participation in society and the variation in these skills over time. The students participating in the assessment are chosen by random sampling.

PISA also gauges attitudes to learning and learning skills. Questionnaires to students and schools gauge learning environments at home and at school, the students' social background and the support they receive in learning, and students' attitudes to school and learning.

Results and publications in PISA Assessment

PISA assesses literacy, mathematics and science skills. Each of these regions alternately serves as the main PISA region.

Since the 2012 survey, the assessment of financial literacy has been offered to the participating countries in the so-called financial literacy assessment as an international option. Finland participated in the assessment of financial literacy for the first time in 2018.

In addition, PISA has changing areas for each survey. The innovative area of research in 2025 is digital learning. Foreign Language Assessment is also included for the first time in the 2025 PISA survey.
