Why creative collaborative pedagogical methods like applied drama have potential for sustainability studies? What to consider when planning to use these methods in higher education? How can you use them to different topics? Welcome to the Home of Wisdom Coffee Conversations to learn and discuss!
Sustainability Teaching for Impact
The presentation will be based on a new book called “” (Routledge, 2025) that is a practical guide for those wanting to inspire and engage higher education students in the areas of sustainability. This book encourages new and experienced university teachers across disciplines to adopt and adapt dramatic methods, with a view to develop their teaching. The book is targeted for university teachers – with and without experience in drama. It introduces step-by-step, applied drama and performance arts methods that have been tried-and-tested across disciplines to deepen and broaden sustainability knowledge, skills, mindsets, and practices.
The presentation will include guidelines how to plan and prepare usages of these methods with some examples of easy practices to apply: How to debate in role, how to enable embodied emotional reflection, vision futures and address conflict-situations by trying out different solutions.
About the presenter
Anna Lehtonen (M.Ed, PhD) is a Postdoctoral researcher affiliated with the Finnish Institute of Education Research at the Ģֱ. Currently she works for the ECF4CLIM Horizon 2020 EU-project on sustainability competences and two Erasmus+ pedagogical projects: Greeniversity about higher education pedagogy and CREA+BIRD about creative transformative methods for sustainability education. Her doctoral thesis “Drama as an interconnecting approach for climate change education” (2021, University of Helsinki) was based on her pedagogical experimentations of applying drama in different educational settings for addressing different perspectives of sustainability education such as nature connections, climate anxiety, psycho-social aspects of climate change, understanding different stakeholders’ perspectives and futures visioning.
