In moral philosophy, interspecies justice concerns rethinking justice beyond what we might owe to other humans. What does that imply for theorising sustainability? Welcome to the House of Wisdom Coffee Conversations to learn and discuss!
Situating Interspecies Justice in Sustainability
Theories of interspecies justice (sometimes also discussed as ecological or multispecies justices) are frequently seen as a corrective to anthropocentric assumptions about the human-nature relationship. That also extends to how concepts like sustainability or sustainable development are understood. Equally, theories of interspecies justice thereby open a distinctive way of thinking about the place of nature in sustainability. In this presentation, Anna Wienhues will illustrate a few ideas about the relationship between interspecies justice and sustainability from an environmental philosophy perspective.
Anna Wienhues is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Philosophy at KU Leuven (Belgium) with a research interest in environmental ethics and green political philosophy.
Join the event on-site or online
We encourage you to take a moment away from your desk and participate on-site at the House of Wisdom (officially known as the Gardener´s House, J-building), where coffee and tea will be served. However, remote participation is also possible. You are warmly welcome to join the event either way!
To join the event remotely, use the link below (passcode 991494). In addition, use your own name as you join to be let in from the waiting room.
Join a workshop after the talk
In addition to the presentation, Anna Wienhues and Teea Kortetmäki will host a workshop after the event. In the workshop we will discuss together the interlinkages and trade-offs between global and domestic agricultural production/food chains and their respective moral desirability, sustainability, and multispecies justice. To support interdisciplinary discussion, relevant conceptual tools from moral philosophy (e.g. sustainability and multi-/interspecies justice) will be introduced to workshop participants; no preparation or prior philosophical knowledge is required.
The workshop will take place 13:30-15:30 at the same place (on-site only).
