In the workshop PhD students or post-doctoral scholars can practise writing a paper proposal for an academic conference and giving a conference presentation. First, you will write a brief (maximum one A4 page) paper proposal before the workshop date, and in the workshop you will give a presentation of no more than 20 minutes, using slides and/or written manuscript. After that, you will respond to comments, feedback and constructive criticism from the audience. The emphasis will be on academic debate, questions and answers and presentation techniques.
The workshop will open with a methodological lecture by Professor Marnix Beyen (Antwerp), an expert who has successfully combined cultural and political history in his research. The topic of the lecture and ensuing hands-on session is “Analyzing political representation as a process of negotiation. A methodological approach". For this session the participants are expected to read some sources which will then be interpreted together.
Participation in the opening lecture and hands-on session as well as circulating a paper proposal, presenting it and responding to feedback gives 3 credit units.
