Why donate to education and research?

The Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture finances universities with basic funding, which is used for education and research. However, all costs are not covered from the ministry’s budget. At the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥, the share financed by the ministry is about 65% of annual costs.
The rest is covered with varying project funding, support from the Research Council of Finland and foundations, and donations from companies and private persons. Donations enable new initiatives in education and research and create a buffer to secure financially difficult years.
Without donations, many things would not be implemented, explored or invented. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has created 12,000 jobs in Central Finland and its financial impact is over 1.1 billion euros. We are a multidisciplinary research university that has excelled in international university rankings. Moreover, we are also a financially sound and reliable investor of assets.
We have used donations to establish several professorships, launch master’s degree education in information and software engineering in the Faculty of Information Technology, strengthen the JYU.Wisdom research community, establish an associate professorship of creative writing in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and build the international Business Innovation and Sustainability (BIS) bachelor’s degree programme in our School of Business and Economics. Donations have also enabled several academic positions in the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, which is coordinated by JYU.

Even small donations matter. The Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ has 50,000 alumni. If each of them were to donate, 20 euros, it would mean a million euros for developing research and education.
As competition among universities grows, we need everyone’s support. A donation to a university is an investment in the future.
Supporting JYU is an investment in the future. Donations enable new initiatives in research and education in the fields agreed with the donor. The donations are professionally invested in a profitable and secure manner.
We value your donations and want to deepen mutual cooperation with our supporters. Donors are invited to join the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥â€™s VIP club, and club members receive newsletters keeping them informed of the University’s activities as well as invitations to special events. They also have the opportunity to participate in separate VIP club activities with university management and researchers from the faculty close to the club member’s heart. The University’s supporters are an important stakeholder group that we want to hear from as we further cooperation with the world of work, plan curricula and develop research programmes.
Donors are also invited to a thank you event hosted by the Rector. If the donor desires, we will publicise the donations to the media and raise donor visibility on the University’s media channels.

When donations to the University exceed 850 euros in a year, you receive a tax deduction in your personal or corporate taxation.
