Faculties, departments, institutes, research groups and other university actors can offer internships to students from FORTHEM universities. Students will receive a grant for their placement either from FORTHEM funding (short placements) or as an Erasmus+ placement grant (placements of at least 2 months). Students can integrate the traineeship into their studies. Traineeships can be paid or unpaid.

Students can integrate the traineeship into their studies. The internship may be paid or unpaid. Offering an internship gives the organisation the opportunity to learn how to work with international job seekers and employees and to gain new ideas for developing its own international activities.

FORTHEM universities help and support both incoming trainees and organisations in practical matters; for example, the application process for trainees is centralised through FORTHEM universities.

One of the important activities of the FORTHEM Alliance is the Civic Engagement Projects (CIPs). These are groups of students from at least three FORTHEM universities who plan and carry out a project independently, with support from the Alliance in terms of both project management skills and funding. The students can carry out their projects on commission, so companies and other local organisations can propose project topics to the student groups.

FORTHEM mobility periods are typically one-week intensive courses, for which 3 students from each FORTHEM partner university are selected.

Students selected for the course receive a grant for the week, i.e. travel from their home country to the course, accommodation and meals for the days of the course. Information about the course and the application process for students will be organised centrally by the FORTHEM Alliance.

The course organiser receives the pre-screened applications and, once the students have been selected, the local FORTHEM offices take care of the payment of the students' travel grants. The FORTHEM offices also assist the course organisers with the practical arrangements for accommodation and meals. Selected courses will be allocated a budget of €500 for catering, e.g. for the welcome event.

FORTHEM also offers students individual short term mobility periods, where typically a master or postgraduate student can visit another FORTHEM university, e.g. in connection with their research topic.

These periods always have an academic host and university staff are encouraged to cooperate in this way, both as hosts and as senders. An individual short term mobility period can be very useful, for example, for a young researcher who is just establishing his/her own international networks.
