Why JYU? 5 reasons to choose us

Every year, many international students choose the Ä¢¹½Ö±²¥ as their study destination. But why choose our university? Our students asked other students about the reasons behind their decision, so here are 5 good reasons to choose JYU:
1. Students get support in academic and life matters
JYU students experience respect, cordiality and genuine interest from teachers and staff during their studies. At JYU, teachers are only addressed by their first names (with no academic titles). This breaks down any hierarchy and makes teachers approachable and friendly. Students say they feel comfortable presenting their academic and work-life plans to teachers because they feel respected and supported.
The staff at the Student and Academic Services and International Office provide critical support by responding clearly to emails and providing referrals and follow-ups on students’ behalf. There is an opportunity for new students to interact with student ambassadors about the student experience and living in Jyväskylä in general.
JYU also assigns tutors (fellow students) to guide new students. These tutors maintain contact with students to make their transition to Finland and the Finnish culture smooth. Tutors give students all the information and resources they need to start studies and life in JYU. When you choose JYU, you are guaranteed a supportive environment for studies and life during your studies.
2. Students can create a study plan that looks like them
At JYU, your Personal Study Plan (PSP) plan can look just like you. Besides the core courses in their study programme, you can choose courses from other ‘fields’ that represent your interests. When you meet your academic supervisor, you can discuss (and they do respect your decision) choosing courses from other faculties based on your interest, aspirations, and career objectives.
At JYU, it is common, for example, for students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences to take elective courses from the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, and vice versa. JYU encourages multidisciplinary learning, and students are constantly finding perfect fits for their career and academic journey by combining courses across fields within and outside JYU. For example, students can select and earn credit for virtual courses from other Finnish Universities through UNIPID network and open universities in Finland.
3. Students get high-quality education and opportunities to collaborate internationally
At our university, students are part of an internationally renowned university with a growing social impact. JYU has a long history in the field of education being Finland’s first teacher-training school before it transitioned into a multidisciplinary university.
The Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences is the only sports faculty in Finland. It is reputed internationally for its study programmess and facilities. Further, the Information Systems Program is among the top 3 IT programs in the Nordic region. JYU’s social impact on humanity also reflects in the activities at the School of Resource Wisdom which undertakes research and leads meaningful projects on social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
JYU also provides opportunities for students to network and collaborate with other students globally. The university is the only university in Finland and one of the 9 universities in Europe that is part of the Forthem Alliance in which students can undertake short-term mobilities at member universities and individual mobility (up to six months supervised by a professor in the host university). These opportunities are in addition to exchange study opportunities worldwide with funding from various sources.
4. Students study, work and stay social
JYU is a hive of social and academic activities which bring a balance to studies, work, and social life. As a student, you can study, work, and stay socially active with the many opportunities on campus.
Students participate actively in groundbreaking research projects and experiments as hired research or project assistants. There's also opportunities to participate in research teams, seminars, and international conferences and co-author academic papers with university professors in high-impact journals making their progression into doctoral programs seamless.
At the same time, students lead and organise social clubs, student organization activities, festivals, fun shows, sports events, etc. Is a debate club of interest to you? Are you a climate change advocate? Are you drawn to sport and fitness, or are events organizing your field? Maybe have a new and innovative idea for a social club or project you want to start on campus or in the city! You are welcome to present your ideas and receive support from the student union (JYY) and funding within Finland or EU agencies to implement your project.
5. Students draw from a well of well-being programs
Life and studies in a new country can be overwhelming, when everything is new around you. The pressure of completing assignments, meeting deadlines, and adjusting to living can have an impact on students' well-being.
JYU values student well-being. Therefore, comprehensive well-being programs are available through JYU’s Student Life services to assist students' well-being and learning abilities. Students can participate in Student Life programmes, receive credit for well-being classes, and speak with professionals about a personal or academic challenge for free, and in confidence.
