How to make the most of Finnish winter: 5 practical tips

Whether you’re already studying here at JYU or planning to join us in the future, here are five tips to help you embrace and enjoy the Finnish winter:
1. Dress smartly: Keep warm and comfortable
Winter fun starts with the right clothing. Dressing in layers is the key to staying warm and dry:
- Base Layer: Use thermal or sportswear fabrics that wick moisture away from your skin, keeping you dry.
- Middle Layer: Choose insulating materials like wool or fleece to retain heat.
- Outer Layer: Opt for windproof and waterproof jackets and trousers to shield you from snow and wind.
Make sure your extremities are well-protected. Wear layered socks and insulated boots with slip-resistant soles. Gloves should fit well and be warm, and your hat should fully cover your ears. Remember the Finnish saying, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!”
2. Stay safe and bright: Use reflectors and light therapy
In the dark Finnish winter, reflectors are essential for staying visible to drivers. Attach them to your coat or bag—they’re easy to find in local stores and a simple way to stay safe.
To combat the lack of natural sunlight, start taking Vitamin D supplements in autumn. They are available at pharmacies, and you can ask the pharmacist for advice on dosage. Additionally, light therapy lamps can make a big difference in your energy and mood. These lamps mimic natural sunlight and can be used at home. Just 20–30 minutes a day can help!
If you’re looking for a well-lit and inviting space, the JYU library is a perfect spot to study. Its bright lights are designed to mimic natural daylight, making it a comfortable place to spend time during dark winter days.
3. Keep moving: Stay active and energized
As a JYU student, you have access to free gym facilities on campus, or you can sign up for UMove classes. These group activities—like yoga, dance, or fitness sessions—can keep you motivated and energized while offering a chance to connect with others.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Jyväskylä’s winter landscape is perfect for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or ice skating. If you’ve never tried these activities before, don’t worry—there are beginner-friendly options available. Recently, I had the chance to watch an ice hockey game, and it was an exhilarating experience that gave me a whole new appreciation for winter sports. Why not give it a try?
4. Discover the joy of sauna
Finnish sauna culture is something you simply have to experience. A sauna session not only warms you up but also helps you relax and recover after a long day in the cold. Many student housing options in Jyväskylä include sauna facilities, so make sure to take advantage of this unique Finnish tradition.
5. Embrace the Finnish winter lifestyle
Winter in Finland is more than just surviving the cold—it’s about finding joy in the little things. Light candles at home, enjoy a hot drink, or explore the snowy landscapes around Jyväskylä. Take time to connect with your peers and make memories.
It’s also worth mentioning that Finnish apartments are typically very well insulated. Even when the temperature outside drops to -32 degrees Celsius, the indoor temperature remains comfortable, usually around 20-21 degrees Celsius. So, while it’s essential to dress warmly outdoors, you can enjoy cozy warmth indoors without worry.
Living in Jyväskylä during the winter is a special experience that opens the door to new adventures. With a little preparation and a positive mindset, you can fully embrace this magical season.
Welcome to Jyväskylä—where even the coldest days are filled with warmth!
