Social Work teaching and research takes places at two campuses, in Jyväskylä and Kokkola, which are both involved in the ASTRA project, coordinated by the Social Work unit in the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius.

Social Work teaching and research takes places at two campuses, in Jyväskylä and Kokkola, which are both involved in the ASTRA project, coordinated by the Social Work unit in the Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius.

The ESRs will be situated at the main campus of JYU in Jyväskylä.

Professor Aila-Leena Matthies, Social Sciences, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, JYU


Prof. Aila-Leena MatthiesAila-Leena Matthies, is a Professor of Social work at the JYU, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius. She is the Principal Investigator and head of the ASTRA project. She is the main supervisor of the ESR2. Aila-Leena Matthies is leading the Social Work teaching and research team at the second campus of the JYU in Kokkola, which is offering a Master program of Social Work for part-time students as well as doctoral studies. The team has an active profile in collaborative research with social work agencies and NGOs.

Besides ASTRA, Aila-Leena is currently involved in research and practice development of participatory approaches and ecosocial work especially with people in precarious life situations.




Senior Lecturer Kati Turtiainen , Social Sciences, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, JYU

Turtiainen, KatiKati Turtiainen works as a Senior Lecturer in social work at the Ģֱ, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, Finland. Before academia, she worked as the director of immigration services for the City of Jyväskylä. In ASTRA, she is the main supervisor of ESR 4. During her work career, she has participated in various national and international development projects concerning multicultural work with forced and voluntary migrants.

Her research concerns how welfare services promote the integration of migrants, especially forced migrants, in Finnish society. Her research interests also include the formation of trust and recognition of
(forced) migrants in social work and other welfare services.

Professor Kati Närhi, Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Ģֱ (JYU)

Närhi KatiKati Närhi is a full professor of social work at the Ģֱ, Finland. In ASTRA, she is the leader of the WP4, social sustainability transition, and the main supervisor of ESR1 and ESR9. Her research is focused on ecosocial transition in social work.

She is also interested in user involvement and user participation, as well as structural social work. She is a vice-head of Social Work Unit in the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy. She is also responsible for nationwide postgraduate social work specialisation education in structural social work.

Postdoctoral researcher Ingo Stamm, Social Sciences, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, JYU

Photo of Ingo StammIngo Stamm is a postdoctoral researcher at the Ģֱ, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, since 2015. He finished his PhD on social security and human rights in Finland and Germany at the University of Siegen, Germany, in 2014. He is also holding a master´s degree in social work from the Alice Salomon University Berlin on social work as a human rights profession. Additionally, he has 10 years of practical experience as a social worker in the fields of family care, child protection and youth work.

His research focuses on ecosocial work, sustainability and unemployment policies as well as on social work ethics and social economy. He has long-standing experience in cross-national, comparative research.

In the Astra project Ingo Stamm is a co-supervisor of two ESRs. He and Professor Kati Närhi lead together work package four WP4 social sustainability transition.
