At the ISCTE-University Institute of Lisbon, Social Work is part of Public Politics and Political Science Department and linked to the Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology / (CIES-Iscte) of the Iscte- University Institute of Lisbon which has high quality of research, international reputation and active participation in public discussion. It is a R&D unit, recognized and evaluated by the FCT agency, in the area of social sciences dedicated to studying contemporary social problems from a multidisciplinary perspective.
Social Work teaching and research takes place in the same campus (in Lisbon) and the ASTRA project in our university is coordinated by the Social Work PhD Director. The ESRs will be situated at the research campus CIES-Iscte, Lisbon.
Iscte – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa / University Institute of Lisbon is a public university established in 1972 in Management and Economics, Social Sciences and Humanities, ICT and Architecture with about 10.500 students and 400 professors. It is research oriented with a multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approach, that includes eight research units and six laboratories (www.iscte-iul.pt).
CIES-ISCTE
Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia / Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology, CIES-Iscte, is one of those R&D units in the area of social sciences. Dedicated to studying contemporary social problems from a multidisciplinary perspective, its main domains are sociology, public policy, political science, communication, education, modern and contemporary history and social work. The Centre is involved in numerous projects promoted by national and European institutions, and in international scientific research programs and cooperation networks.

Theoretical Research (Epistemology, Social Work theory and the interdisciplinarity of knowledge); the science dimension in Social Work; E-social work/Digital Social Work and Applied Research (Social Work Practices in Institutional, Community and Family contexts in the context of Children, Youth, Family, Adults in a situation of social vulnerability, social protection system and social policies, integrated and collaborative approaches).

Assistant professor Helena Belchior-Rocha
Helena Belchior Rocha has a PhD in Social Work, is an Assistant professor at ISCTE- University Institute of Lisbon in the Department of Political Science and Public Policies and deputy director of the Transversal Skills Laboratory. Integrated researcher at CIES, Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology, linked to national and international research projects, namely 2 from Marie Curie Actions. Author of papers and communications at national and international congresses, in the areas of social work theory and methodology, environment, sustainability, community Intervention, ethics, human rights, social policies and Well-being, education and soft skills. Member of the Editorial Board of national/international journals.

Assistant Professor Maria João Pena
Maria João Pena holds a PhD in Social Work, MA in Sociology and bachelor’s degree in social work. She is the coordinator of the PhD Program is Social Work and also professor at master and bachelor degree. She is a researcher in CIES-IUL (Centre for research and studies in Sociology). The research interests are in Theory and Epistemology of social work, social work practices with children and families, at school and in disability.
