Professor Susanne Elsen

Susanne ElsenDr. Susanne Elsen is full Professor for Sociology at the Free University of Bolzano, Italy.

She studied Social Work and Social Education, Sociology and Economics and has long-term experience in the development of theory, research and practice in integrative area approaches for social innovation, community-based eco-social development as well as in social- and solidarity economy with a special focus on solutions for disadvantaged rural and urban areas.

She combines participatory research strategies as cooperative and transdisciplinary knowledge production with approaches to social change and development, involving stakeholders and concerned people.

Associate Professor Urban Nothdurfter

Associate Professor Urban NothdurfterUrban Nothdurfter is Associate Professor in Social Work and Social Policy at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano. He is a qualified social worker and holds a PhD in Sociology and Social Research from the University of Trento. He has been a visiting doctoral researcher at the UC Berkeley School of Social Welfare and winner of the Jos Berghman Welfare Studies Stipend awarded from the KU Leuven.

He has extensive experience in social work education and currently serves as the director of the BA programme in Social Work at the Free University of Bozen and as a member of the executive committee of the European Association of Schools of Social Work (EASSW). He is also board member of the Italian Academic Society for Social Work (SOCISS).

His research interests and activities mainly concentrate on the relationship between social policy development and social work practice, with a particular focus on the street-level implementation of policies and policy practice. He also works on sexuality, gender, and family issues, on the challenges of right-wing populism to social work and on eco-social work and sustainable welfare development. His research is mainly based on qualitative methodologies with a particular interest in participative approaches.
