Bridges and Barriers: Experiences of Young Forced Migrant Women and Girls in Berlin’s 'Willkommensklassen' / Welcome Classes

Unveiling the Complexities, Challenges, and Opportunities Young Women Face in Their Journey Towards Social Integration in Berlin

Exploring the Impact of Educational Environments on Integration: A Deeper Dive:

Through our extensive consultations and discussions, a recurring theme illuminated the profound influence of educational settings, such as welcome classes, on the integration journey of our peer researchers. These environments, while pivotal for many, also posed challenges for some. This crucial insight prompted our collaborative decision to venture deeper into this realm, unveiling a more nuanced understanding of its role in shaping their experiences.

Research Goal: To understand how welcome class activities affect the social integration experiences and confidence of refugee girls in Berlin Mitte. The study will also identify areas for improvement.

Main Research Question: How do welcome classes facilitate the integration of young women and girls from forced migration backgrounds?

Sub-Questions:

1. What are their personal experiences within these classes, and how do these experiences impact their integration?
2. How are support networks formed within and around welcome classes, and what is their significance?
3. What challenges to integration persist, and what strategies and support mechanisms effectively overcome them?

We explore these questions to uncover how current integration structures, such as welcome classes, impact these young women’s integration into German society. This research is crucial in understanding their experiences and making integration more inclusive and supportive.
