The research with the Astra Project will consider that social work is a profession that promotes social justice. Yet, most social workers are trained and work primarily with individuals and families to address their issues, leaving behind the broader system problems like social injustices. Even with a history of community-level activism in the global north, more developed nations like England see social workers moving into administrative roles with little or no social justice activity as part of their practice. By working with a group of young people in Northeast England on Active Travel issues, this research will use structural social work and youth work theories to address social justice issues connected to pedal bicycle use by young people. It will provide a case study on how other social workers can use Participatory Action Research (PAR) to inform practice and improve the well-being of service users by addressing the broader system issues impacting their lives.
My background is in social work having been awarded a Master's in Social Work, majoring in Administration and Community Organisation, from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan before practising as a social worker in child protection, family, and youth services in the United States. I then moved to the Republic of Ireland practising first in adult mental health services and later in social work education and social enterprise.
