ESR13: Athina Moroglou
I obtained a Diploma in Architecture (equivalent to master) from the University of Patras, Greece in 2016 and a M.Sc. in Integrated Urbanism and Sustainable Design from the University of Stuttgart, Germany in 2020, while receiving in 2018 a full scholarship for postgraduate studies of Bodossaki Foundation (Greece).
During my M.Sc. studies I was engaged with interdisciplinary research and had the opportunity to work on site-specific projects in cooperation with local communities and different stakeholders, organizations and institutions. The projects I was involved in aimed to develop practical and conceptual approaches towards sustainable urban planning by combining environmental and social concepts for urban transformation under the challenges of the global urbanization trends. I conducted multiple interviews and developed participatory tools for data collection both in developed and developing contexts. The title of my research thesis was “From anti-austerity protests to urban alternative futures in the post-crisis neoliberal city. The case of Athens, Greece”. I have working experience as an architect and I have participated in various workshops, summer schools and courses on urban planning, social entrepreneurship and humanitarian action.
My research project in ASTRA aims to investigate the role of Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) in inclusive urban development. It focuses on the context of Brussels Capital-Region and explores the position of the SSE sector within the local urban policy of “Sustainable Neighbourhood Contracts” (in French: Contrats de Quartiers Durables) targeting the regeneration of socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The research attempts to shed light on the contribution of SSE initiatives in local territorial development and to create linkages between strategies of Urban Development and practices of Social Work in view of the sustainable socio-economic inclusive transition. Currently, the research is in the data collection phase, during which interviews with SSE actors and public authorities involved in the Sustainable Neighbourhood Contracts are conducted with the objective of shaping a profound understanding of the SSE context in the development of the poor neighbourhoods of Brussels.
