Temple Raiders-Young People's Cycling Experiences Map is Launched

Temple Raiders, a bike youth group run by Tyneside Outdoors in South Shields, has launched a lived experiences map of cycling in the
This interactive map pins places where the young people said they like to go, places they think could be improved for cycling, and places where they found problems. Some of the pins have videos as well. It is hoped that the map will continue to be updated by the young people and be a positive community resource.
The Temple Raiders-Young People's Cycling Experiences Map resulted from a six-month-long research project with Temple Raiders, youth workers and Eileen Lauster of Durham University and the Astra Project. It was done with participatory action research methods. This means the young people and the youth workers were involved in the process of designing and creating the map. Tyneside Outdoors provides youth work activities in East and West Newcastle and in South Shields helping young people to enjoy the positive benefits of the outdoors. The Temple Raiders meet weekly in Temple Park, South Shields, throughout the year and take part in a range of cycling activities such as BMX racing and mountain biking as well as other activities with TO’s other groups.

One of the youth workers is Gerard New. He said, “The research project started as a way to address climate change issues and evolved over time to focus on Active Travel since this reduces carbon emission by switching from car to bike travel. Members of Temple Raiders already do a large amount of travelling on their bikes, so capturing this information as data and creating a map is really helpful.” A young person that participated in the project, Ryan Dobson, added, “The map is informative and easy to use”.The map is free to use by other individuals and groups, asking only that the work of the Temple Raiders is acknowledged. Eileen Lauster, PhD student at the Department of Sociology at Durham University, added, “It is hoped that visitors to the area, other young people, city planners and people connected to cycling in South Shields and the greater North East area will find the map a useful resource.”
Temple Raiders was formed in 2019 as part of Tyneside Outdoors. It is supported by youth workers trained to assist young people’s personal and social growth through outdoor activities. Tyneside Outdoors is a registered charity that provides an effective model of engaging residents in disadvantaged areas in youth and community work based on healthy outdoor activities. Over six months, a combined total of twelve young people aged 12 to 22 took part in the research.
