ASTRA blog by Conference Chair Dr. Ingo Stamm: Final ASTRA Conference Successfully Held in Jyväskylä!

The final conference of the European research and doctoral training project was a success, taking place at the end of May 2024 during a sunny and warm spring week in Jyväskylä. For five days, the ASTRA community, along with international and Finnish participates, came together to discuss the link between social work and transdisciplinary sustainability transition research. During the pre-conference from May 20 to 22, all 15 ASTRA doctoral researchers presented their research results. It was an impressive collection of highly relevant and bold research at the interfaces of social, economic and environmental realms, with social work as an international discipline at the centre.

The main conference with the title “Shaping an ecosocial future now! Disseminating and advancing transdisciplinary research on sustainability transitions” took place from May 23 to 25. It brought together not only the ASTRA community but also researchers, students, and practitioners from Finland and many other countries across the globe. The longest journey was undertaken by the first keynote speaker, Associate Professor Giannina Muñoz Arce from the University of Chile. Her speech on “Decolonisation of Social Work Research and Knowledge: Transdisciplinary Approaches andPhoto of Conference organisers together with keynote speaker Giannina Munoz Arce Ecosocial Perspectives” was thought-provoking and inspiring, stimulating lively discussions about the most pressing issues in international social work. In the afternoon, several ASTRA supervisors and coordinators presented the main results of the three ASTRA work packages on social, economic and environmental sustainability. Despite the challenges of transdisciplinary and cross-national research, it was a powerful demonstration of the importance of social work research. This was followed by several engaging workshops covering topics such as European doctoral training in service of sustainability transitions, sustainability challenges in academia, and a continuation of the discussion of the ASTRA results. On the second day, the keynote speeches by Dirk Holemans, director of the Belgian Think Tank Oikos, as well as by Associate Professor Barzoo Eliassi, from the Swedish Linnaeus University, opened exciting debates about the link between migration, sustainability Photo of keynote speakers Barzoo Eliassi, Giannina Munoz Arce and Dirk Holemansand social work. In the afternoon, the participants had a chance to deepen their conversations in four workshops on topics such as community-based participatory action research, migration and sustainable development, economic democratization and the ecosocial work paradigm. Once again, the power of international academic cooperation became clearly visible. The final day of the conference featured a walking tour about the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, who grew up in Jyväskylä and left his marks all over the city. Among other works, he designed the main building of the Ģֱ.

The ASTRA conference “Shaping an ecosocial future now!” was a great final event for an exceptional project on transdisciplinary research on social work and sustainability. It demonstrated the important research the ASTRA community has produced over three years and highlighted the significance of academic exchange across different disciplines and national borders.
