Uutinen kesäkoulusta on englanninkielinen.

Aim of the Summer School

During the Summer School week, phenomenon-based learning and multidisciplinary learning units as enrichment and integrators of teaching were discussed. The course consisted of lectures and workshops about Finnish education system and especially Finnish educational philosophy accompanied with practical examples. With participants from nine European countries, the Summer School offered a great possibility to compare  Finnish examples and European experiences on the topic.

Practical organisation

The Department of Teacher Education of JYU was in charge of the organisation of the course. There were over 140 applicants all over the alliance, but the number of participants per university was limited to 3 to keep the group small enough for interaction. The admission process was completed in March, and the accepted students were registered to the JYU study administration system. There were three JYU academics mainly in charge of the teaching and assessment. The participants got access to the Moodle platform of the course and all course material was shared there.

Academic outcomes

In order to receive 2 ECTS credits for the course, the participants were expected to participate in the whole programme, complete some independent study, learning assingments and an exam. Out of 20 students, 17 fully completed the course (by 3rd June), one with an extra assignment and thus gaining 3 ECTS credits. It is safe to say that the exprience was great and all of the participants took the course really seriously.

Experiences from the intensive week

"The surprisingly hot week was an inspiring experience not only for the participants, but also for us, the summer school teachers. All participants were eager to start working in multicultural small groups from the very first day. The enthusiastic chatter continued outside the workshops. Experiences from nine different school cultures painted a rich picture of the current state of European education." - Pasi Ikonen, leading teacher of the course

Student feedback

Anonymous feedback was collected from the participants in the end of the course.

“I enjoyed the summer school, and it was nice to learn new things. The Finnish education system is a good example how things can be done better than in other countries. It also opens up more ways to make school more enjoyable for students AND teachers.”

“The whole week was very engaging and fun, the talks were well chosen and the input on different school systems was very valuable.”

“I think this experience is been very important and interesting because the comparison with the educational system of other countries allowed me to reflect even more on what needs to change in Italian schools.”

“I really liked to participate in this summer school. I'm inspired by the Finnish educational system and as I am moving into the more of the administrative work this year, I now have some things I need to think about to implement them in my workplace.”
