Yitian Xie’s dissertation provides theoretical and practical contributions to behavioral information security field. The dissertation takes different theory perspectives from health psychology and other fields, and tests them in the personal information security behavior context.

Article-based dissertation consist of three studies. The main contribution of the first of the articles Reconsideration of the cognitive mediation (CM) assumptions and CM process in the threat-based model offers revisiting and illustration of CM mechanism to researchers who use survey-based method to investigate security-related behavior based on the threat-based models.

In the second article An Investigation about how emotional bias influences home users’ security-related behavior, the findings suggest that defensive responses among home users of anti-malware software may lead to security-compromising behavioral intentions and, in the long run, may obstruct anti-malware software’s effective protection of home computers.

The potential damage caused by emotional bias require attention from security practitioners.

Instead of purely objective information processing, the cognitive appraisals and behavioral intentions influenced by defensive motivation are dominated by the level of perceived vulnerability. Thus, in the design of future security notifications, practitioners should consider communicating the vulnerability of home users when they are exposed to certain malware threats.

The study recommends that practitioners highlight information about the vulnerability of home users to certain malware threats to prompt more security-conducive behavioral intentions.

Third article Conceptualization and measurement of personal users’ information security knowledge (ISK) decomposes and conceptualizes ISK to four sub-constructs, which are knowledge of declarative infosec tool or measure, declarative infosec risk knowledge, procedural infosec knowledge, and procedural infosec risk knowledge in the information security context.
