Target areas

Where are we acting?

Project actions take place in 14 different main river systems including 69 individual rivers out of which 31 are located in Finland (hosting 25 % of the Finnish FPM populations), 37 in Sweden (with 23 currently known FPM populations, i.e. 3,6% of the Swedish populations) and one in Estonia (100% of the Estonian populations). Rivers in the Natura 2000 areas were prioritized to ensure the permanency of project outcomes. In addition, project rivers were selected in line with the national FPM conservation strategies, on basis of their conservation status, state of urgency and estimated cost-benefit ratio to achieve the best revival potential.

The targeted Natura 2000 sites, totalling up to 671 701 ha and 48 target rivers, are:

  • in Finland Lapväärtinjokilaakso, River Karvianjoki rapids, Pinsiön-Matalusjoki, Ruonanjoki, Lohivaara-Matarasuo, Simojoki, UK-puisto-Sompio-Kemihaara, Metsäkylä, Pahkakuru-Jurmunlampi and Koivuoja,
  • in Sweden Byskeälven, RÃ¥neälven, Piteälven, Torne and Kalix River System and Ã…byälven, and
  • in Estonia Lahemaa National Park and Põhja-Kõrvemaa Nature Reserve.

In addition to Natura 2000 sites, 21 Finnish rivers are included to the project with other means to ensure permanency of the project outcomes.
