This unit discusses English as a global language from two perspectives. On the one hand, it looks at English as a language spreading through flows of popular culture and the ways in which it is taken up and employed as part of local cultural practices. On the other hand, it sheds light on English as a vehicular language (English as a lingua franca, ELF) in situations in which it is no one's first language as well as the characteristics of such forms of language use.
