Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to apply the Finite Difference and Finite Element method to simple problems. Students will be able to simulate a classical system using molecular dynamics as well as describe what Force Field MD is and tell what are the most commonly used software. They can write a code that simulates a simple chemical reaction using an event-based Monte Carlo method. They can also calculate the ground state properties of atoms using quantum Monte Carlo as well as calculate the properties of a finite temperature harmonic oscillator using path integral Monte Carlo.

Modelling of physical phenomena and computer simulations; numerical solution of ordinary and partial differential equations; classical and quantum molecular dynamics simulation; event-based Monte Carlo and quantum Monte Carlo methods.

FYSA2010 Electromagnetism and FYSA2020 Mechanics.
