CMBS1104 Methods in molecular genetics (5 cr)
Learning outcomes
The course gives abilities to understand and plan studies that utilize genetic methods widely used in the field of molecular biology, ecology, microbiology and medical sciences. Students will learn the time and equipment needed for molecular analyses, and get confident in working in the laboratory with good work practices. Also, students will be able to follow laboratory protocols independently, use micropipettes accurately and keep their lab books updated so that it is possible to repeat successful experiments and find reasons for unsuccessful experiments. Group works and final presentation should increase student's showmanship, social skills and confidence.

Lectures, laboratory work and computer class. Presentations by the students.
Content
This laboratory course aims to introduce modern techniques in the field of molecular genetics: quantitative PCR, digital droplet PCR, next generation sequencing (NGS) of various starting materials and CRISPR gene analysis in the context of environmental microbiology. Lab works include nucleic acid extraction, purification and quantification methods, quantitative PCR amplification and electrophoresis, Ion Torrent sequencing as well as the analysis of the sequencing results.

Instructions for laboratory works and other given material.
Assessment criteria
Attendance to lab works (compulsory), laboratory notebook, student presentations of the theory and group results.
Prerequisites
Completed Bachelor’s studies in life sciences.
