Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
• identify material and energy flows related to organisation’s products / services
• analyse the effects an organisation’s material flows have on the environment by applying life cycle thinking
• use different methods and tools to help quantify and compere the environmental impacts of providing products and services
• extend the perspective from assessing the environmental impacts to cover sustainability impacts at large
• explain the importance and recognize the potential weaknesses of life-cycle thinking
• structure a life-cycle assessment and formulate recommendations based on this in a group assignment

Contact teaching course. Autumn semester, 2nd period. The stydy methods of the contact teaching course are specified in the study program annually.

Content

Concepts and terminology related to the assessment of material / energy flows. Different methods used to analyse material flows, e.g. life-cycle assessment (LCA), life-cycle costing (LCC), social life cycle assessment (S-LCA), life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA). Management and application of material flow models.
