Marketing manager

Anna Zaborna,

What is your education?
I finished my first Master’s Degree in Education and English at the Kharkiv State Pedagogical University in Ukraine (2003-2009). I first came to the Ģֱ as a visiting student in 2005-2006 and decided to come back. Compared to Ukraine, where you have a certain studying program for everybody, there’s much more academic freedom here, plus the level of English is much better. I started my second Master’s Degree in English at the Ģֱ in 2008 and graduated in 2012, with Business and Economics and Spanish as minor subjects and also Finnish studies at Kielikeskus. During my studies in Finland, I have done two internships, both in 2011. The first internship was at the InternationalOffice of theĢֱ for 3 months; duringthis internshipI coordinated free time programmes for the University's Summer School in Human Sciences. The second one was an AIESEC internship for about 1,5-2 months in Trondheim, Norway, helping the local community to recruit new members.I was also an executive board member at AIESEC in 2009-2010, responsible for the local committee’s external relations. In the fall term of 2011 I did a bi-lateral exchange in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, studying tourism.

Who is your current employer and what is your job description?
I work as a Marketing Manager at the Central Finland Chamber of Commerce. At the moment I work in a two-year development project which aims at promoting the region of Central Finland to Russian tourists. The resorts that have made the project possible are: Peurunka, Himos, Riihivuori, Revontuli, Sokos Hotels and Rantasipi Laajavuori.

How did you end up at your current job and where did you work before?
After several years of working as an International Relations Coordinator/Sales Manager at Youth Center Piispala, I found an open application for the current job. My experience with Russian clients, Russian as a mother tongue and Finnish and English as working languages helped me get the job I’m doing now.

Can you give an example of your typical working day? What skills are required at your position?
The working days can be very different. The work I do includes a lot of planning, writing, working with visual elements, updating web pages and social media channels, organising sales campaigns, media tours etc.

What kind of advice would you give to someone who is looking for this kind of job?
I would say that very often in tourism there are many skills needed at the same time, yet the most important thing is to have a positive attitude and the will to learn. “You learn by doing” is a good motto and it’s important to realise you can apply your skills on so many levels. It’s also very important to be active during your student years and do internships and short term jobs. You don’t only work for your CV, you learn something new each time.
