Osaamistavoitteet

The aim of the course is to unify the concepts from previous quantum chemistry courses (molecular structure, molecular interactions) and thermodynamics courses (material properties, reaction rates). The students will become familiar with the basic concepts of statistical thermodynamics and can apply them to chemical problems. Student will understand how intermolecular interactions are related to macroscopic properties and how the latter can be obtained from first principles.

Arviointiperusteet

The written exam will evaluate the students' understanding of the course material and his or her ability to compute macroscopic thermodynamic quantities from microscopic properties.

A linear

properties of matter based on

Ability to employ the concepts of statistical mechanics to compute properties of matter

Arvosanakohtaiset arviointiperusteet

Passing with grade 1 requires basic understanding of the course material
Passing with grade 5 requires full understanding and the ability to calculate macroscopic thermodynamic quantities from microscopic properties.

Other grades will be interpolated linearly between these extremes based on the score of the exam.
