Osaamistavoitteet
After completing the course or studying the books students will be able to
o define and apply the basic concepts of semantics and, to a lesser extent, pragmatics
o identify and discuss different levels of meaning as well as different aspects of constructing meaning
o apply this knowledge to their work in other areas (discourse, sociolinguistics, teaching English)
Suoritustavat
Weekly tutorials, individual and group tasks in class, and written assignments. A self-study option with a take-home exam or essay.

The course aims to deepen students’ understanding of the basic semantic concepts and how to use them in the analysis of English.
³¢¾±²õä³Ù¾±±ð»å´Ç³Ù
100% attendance is required. Students may be absent from no more than two classes for reasons beyond their control (e.g. illness or injury) on condition that they notify the instructor and explain the reason for the absence. In such cases, no make-up work is required. Three absences will result in having to repeat the course.

Readings will be provided either in class or through Moodle. The course is primarily based on two books:

Arviointiperusteet
Grading on the scale from 0 to 5, based on course work and the final exam.
