Osaamistavoitteet
After completing the course the students will be able to
鈥dentify the main directions of research in text linguistics,
鈥nderstand and apply the concepts of text, hypertext, text type and genre,
鈥ifferentiate between structural, functional and cognitive approaches,
鈥pply different methods for text analysis
鈥escribe the move structure of various texts
鈥ritically analyse the structure of texts published on websites.

Texts can be seen as products, structures and processes. Etymologically, the term text originates from the Latin verb texere, meaning 鈥渢o weave, to join, to construct.鈥� The question is how the elements of language are woven together to produce a communicative system. This course gives an overview of the main trends in the study, analysis and categorization of texts. Special attention will be paid to the structure and design of online texts. The course will integrate approaches from text linguistics, cognitive theories, genre analysis, social semiotics, and web usability.

Students may be absent from no more than two classes.
